BLUE from Bollywood

Several sources have pegged BLUE to be the first Bollywood film with international appeal.  I suspect they are right as this is the only Hindi movie I can even name.

If parts of the trailer seem familar it may be due to BLUE's action-director is James Bomalick from ‘The Fast and The Furious- Tokyo Drift’ and underwater scenes by cinematographer Pete Zuccarini, who worked on Pirates of the Caribbean and Deep Blue Sea.

Basic plot is a fabled treasure 250' below the sea guarded by deadly sharks chased by 3 unlikely partners... friendship, love, greed, and betrayal... chase scenes, bikini's, dolphins, sharks, and explosions.

  • Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) - Aarav's closest friend and an employee, a simple man with a haunted past

  • Aarav (Akshy Kumar) - Owner of Blue shipping and the richest bachelor in the Bahamas

  • Mona (Lara Dutt) - a marine enthusiast, Sagar's confidante and love

  • Sam (Zayed Khan) - Sagar's estranged biker brother fleeing from the Bangkok drug loards

Some quick info:

  • Release Date: 17th October 2009 (Diwali)

  • Inspired by Indian Jones, Jaws, and The Deep

  • Filmed mostly in the Bahamas and Bangkok

  • The scooters are tweaked SeaBobs from Germany

  • Much of the under water video is impromptu

  • Mona - Lara Dutta is actually hydrophobic and could not swim, but is now a diver

  • BLUE - The Official Website

Talking about the challenges of shooting underwater, Director Anthony D’Souza stated, “It is certainly a huge challenge due to several reasons. Firstly, we can only communicate through sign language, which was quite challenging! Secondly, you need to find the best possible spot with all the beautiful creatures around, and then there is limited control over the lighting. We were able to achieve this feat all thanks to our expert cinematographers and the enthusiasm and dedication of our stars!”

Michael Adams, an  editor for Empire (said to be the largest selling film magazines of America) says, Its Bollywood. Its Fast and Furious, Its Deep Blue Sea, and Its Chicago. Its explode-y, bite-y, and dance-y and rather brilliant.

So, what do you think?
